Poysdorf: The Town of Wine! The countryside and the town itself has been very much influenced by wine making, a tradition which has determined for many centuries the life, destiny and wealth of Poysdorf. The town boasts the oldest known vineyard in all Austria called “Hermanns Schachen”, the history of which goes back to 1338.
The Poysdorf wine growing region gained fame owing to wine deliveries to the court of the Russian Tsar in St. Petersburg. The way to distant Russia on the top of a horse-driven wagon being a real adventure 300 years ago, a group of Poysdorf enthusiasts from the local old-timer club decided, some time ago, to follow the footsteps of their predecessors with their veteran tractors and a cask of wine.
Superior loess soil and outstanding locations allow the wine makers from the Poysdorf region to produce ten million litres of high-quality wine every year.
